Prices were propelled well over reserve, aided by the scarcity factor of the heritage art deco building and enormous proportions of the apartments.
The per square metre price record for Port Melbourne is $7000.
During the auction finale episode on Sunday, the apartments at 164 Ingles Street, in the emerging Fishermans Bend belt, fetched between $2.25 million and $2.6 million; equating to between $8,764 and $10,528 per square metre.
In the twelfth series of reality reno drama The Block Queensland couple Will Bethune and Karlie Cicero have walked away $815,000 richer.
Their ground floor apartment in the heritage-listed 1920s Port Melbourne soap factory sold for $2.6 million, smashing the reserve by $715,000.
Not a bad return for three months’ work.
All contestants had reason to celebrate with even the smallest prize winner pocketing $425,000. A total of $2,835,000 in prize money was paid to contestants.
But last year’s Triple Threat edition, fuelled by a sizzling hot market, holds the world record for the biggest prize pool handed out on a single episode of TV, with $3,165,000 paid to contestants.
