Reno market heating up big time

The sausage sizzle sellers at Bunnings must be doing a roaring trade if the latest reno stats are anything to go by.

Council approvals for renovations increased by 8.3 per cent in Queensland in 2024 and lending for renovations increased by 13 per cent in the year to March 2025.

That’s a lot of weekend trips to the hardware! And a lot of a busy builders.

The stats come from the latest HIA Queensland Outlook for Autumn, reports realestate.com.au.

It showed mega bucks were pumped into the Queensland reno market last year.

“The value of renovation investment in Queensland in 2024 was $12.6 billion, only $70 million lower than Victoria,” the HIA reported.

“Queensland also has a disproportionately and relatively larger renovation market than its dwelling stock.”

It’s perhaps not surprising that Queensland homeowners love a good reno. Just look at our housing.

Ageing Queenslanders and post-war cottages are in vast supply in our inner and middle ring suburbs.

These are hot favourites for renovators to buy and bring back to life. Of course some are beyond repair and that’s when the new-build and in-fill opportunities can be found for those seeking a larger scale development opportunity.

In the north side middle ring, suburbs like Stafford, Stafford Heights and Chermside West are ripe with renovation opportunities.

Tracking to the bayside, you’ll also find good reno prospects in suburbs like Zillmere and Deagon, while further out reno-lovers go nuts for the history rich burbs of Sandgate and Shorncliffe.
