It might not cost more than a tub of paint and a Bunnings sausage sizzle if you’re doing a simple DIY job to repaint your bedroom.
But if you’re looking at repainting an entire house, the costs can reach into the tens of thousands.
A recent guide we spotted on Property Tribune makes an admirable attempt to put a price on a job that is renowned for its variability.
It estimated costs starting from $400 to $1500 for a studio apartment, while a four-bedroom house could cost from $3,500 to $11,500.
As the authors note, these are incredibly rough costs but they can give you a guide when you’re at the back-of-the-envelope budget scoping stage.
In addition to the size of your house, the condition of the walls will also influence the cost. Removing old flaking paint, sealing cracks or even peeling off that 1970s wallpaper can also add to the cost if you’re outsourcing to the pros.
If you decide to call in the professionals, the key with any job is to get at least three quotes and, if you can, speak to past clients and check out web reviews to find out if your tradie of choice is offering good value and has a track record of happy customers.
