Tradies have reportedly observed an “explosion” of renovations inspired by The Block in 2025. But the results have often been as disastrous as the reality TV show auction day fails.

“This was due to the advent of AI resources such as a ChatGPT and others, which DIY renovators were often drawing on for a step-by-step guide on how to do works themselves,” reports realestate.com.au.

“The problem was that many of these renovators used what they saw on TV as a guide for how quickly jobs could be pulled off, which was not always realistic.

“Renovators then started works with inaccurate budgets, lofty ideas of how long it would take and a misunderstanding of what jobs were really in their scope without training.”

The result? A boom in calls to tradies to fix up botched jobs.

Deciding whether to DIY or call in the pros is a decision you need to get right.

Plumbing and electrical work, as well as structural changes to your property, should always be completed by a licensed professional.

A poor plumbing job can cause leaks that can cost many times more to fix than the few hundred dollars you may have saved in plumbers fees.

The price of getting electrical work wrong can be your life. Don’t muck with it.

If you have an eye for detail and the patience to do the job well, cosmetic improvements like painting, or even some tiling, might be jobs to try yourself. And if you mess those up, you’re looking at a cosmetic fix, not a structural one.
