What’s your ideal benchtop height? And what about the overhang?
If you’re renovating, it’s easy to get fixated on colours, textures, features and fittings. But nailing the numbers of your ideal layout will make sure your new room functions with flow and comfort.
The clever people at Houzz have gathered these digits to help you plan for reno success. Check out the magic numbers for common kitchen and bathroom renos.
Kitchens
- Aim for 900mm to 950mm for your benchtop in a typical kitchen.
- Kitchen islands range from 600mm to 1200mm deep.
- Allow a benchtop overhang of 300mm to 400mm for bar stools.
- The circulation space between fixtures like your cooktop, bench and dishwasher should be 1200mm.
- Rangehoods should be at least 600mm above an electric cooktop or 650mm above a gas cooktop. But 700mm to 750mm is often preferred.
Bathrooms
- A minimum shower size should be 900mm x 900mm but if you have more space, use it.
- A standard bathtub size will range from 1500mm to 1700mm long and be 750mm wide.
- Vanities are typically 300mm to 600mm deep, and the length is up to you.
- If you’re installing a powder room (that’s a room with a loo) aim for 1200mm to 1500mm in length and 900mm minimum in width.
