Enlist your house in these cost of living hacks

For most home owners their mortgage is the biggest payment they juggle in the cost of living crunch.

So it pays to make sure your house is helping out your hip pocket in other ways and not placing further strain on the household budget balancing act.

Heating, cooling, proximity to public transport, and more, can all contribute to easing your hip pocket burden.

Here are a few things to watch if you’re looking to save on household costs.

  • Dark rooves can make your home much hotter in summer and contribute to higher cooling costs. A light coloured or heat reflective roof could save you big dollars in the long run.
  • Poor insulation or no insulation can also make heating and cooling much less efficient and way more pricey.
  • Leaky taps can lead to water wastage and utility bill wastage.
  • If you’re on the move, buying or renting near public transport can reduce your petrol costs – particularly with Brissie’s 50 cent fares!
  • Some agriculturally gifted folk will swear that growing their own veges and keeping their own chooks ease the grocery bill. There is a return on effort equation to be considered. So this is perhaps better considered as a lifestyle choice than a budget hack.
  • A clothesline in a sunny spot will save you energy on your drying.
  • If you’re buying or renting a home with solar panels you’ll get some reprieve on your energy bills.
