Property prices up but cost of living still appealing in Brissie

by Kate Watt, Marketing Manager 26 September 2024

For years the Brisbane property market’s relative affordability made it appealing to those from southern states seeking warmer climates and cheaper housing.

These days there’s not much difference between Brisbane and Melbourne and in some ranks Brissie tops Melbourne for prices.

But a recent analysis has found that we’re still one of Australia’s most affordable cities when it comes to the overall cost of living.

“The latest Cost of Living Index by City published by data company Numbeo ranks the most expensive cities by scoring everything from cost of living, rent, grocery, restaurant prices and local purchasing power,” reports Domain.

“It ranks 200 cities, with most of Australia’s capital cities ranking in the top 50.”

So where does Brissie sit?

Globally, we’re ranked as the 40th most expensive city with a Cost of Living Index score of 67.9.
This makes us the fifth most expensive city in Australia.

So which city reigns supreme as Australia’s most expensive? The winner is … not Sydney. It’s Canberra, which has a Cost of Living score of 79.3, ranking it the 12th most expensive city in the world.

Check out how Australia’s cities rank from the highest to lowest cost of living score:

  • Canberra
  • Adelaide
