Bathrooms come in all shapes and sizes so if you’re planning a reno it can be hard to know where to begin.

There’s no need to get your knickers in a twist. Houzz has offered up some great bathroom measurement advice to help you splash down the perfect reno.

First up – size matters in the bathroom but bigger isn’t necessarily better, or even needed. If you’ve got a space that is 900 millimetres wide and 1200 millimetres or 1500 millimetres long, you’ve got room for a powder room – that’s a loo and a basin.

Toilets can squeeze into narrow spaces as small as 760 millimetres. But factor in some space for toilet roll holders, brushes and elbow room. Try to factor in 600 millimetres of free space in front of your toilet. If you’re placing your powder room under the stairs, head height is important and don’t go less than 1520 millimetres.

Door widths are important and should be proportionate to the room. A common width is 820 millimetres. While smaller sizes exist they can mean you compromise on ease of accessing your bathroom. For wheelchair accessibility the door should be at least 850 millimetres when open.
