As egg prices have increased, some Aussies are reportedly trialling growing their own. In other words, they’re swapping supermarket eggs for backyard chickens.

We’re not economists so we can say if you’ll save a dollar or not.

But if you are thinking that your backyard would benefit from some chickens, here are a few things to consider.

Check your local council regulations, which in northside Brissie would be either  Brisbane City Council or Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Get a fully enclosed coup that is fox and snake proof. This includes a wire floor – remember dogs and foxes can dig.

Chickens are great at demolishing food scraps but will need a balanced diet including chicken feed which you can get from local produce stores.

Make sure they have plenty of fresh water.

If you plan to free range them, make sure other pets, including dogs are kept safely separate from your feathered friends.

Research different types and varieties for different egg laying frequency. Commercial laying hens like Isa Browns will give you almost daily eggs from a young age but can have shorter lifespan than some other heritage breeds.
