State of Origin: QLD vs NSW property wars

When it comes to property wars, Queensland wins against New South Wales every day of the week.

We must declare our bias of course. We live in Brisbane and love it here.

But we’re not the only ones who see the clear benefits of buying north of the border.

The stats prove it.

“For some property hopefuls trying to buy in Sydney and Melbourne, the temptation to take their hefty budget and plough it into a Queenslander with wraparound verandahs and an oversized backyard proved too hard to resist,” writes Domain recently. “Census data released last year showed that in the five years to 2021, more people moved to the Sunshine State from within Australia than to any other state or territory.”

They go on to report Brisbane’s median house price is more than half a million dollars cheaper than Sydney’s.

If you want the Sydney life on a Brisbane-house-size budget, you’ll be restricted to a two-bedroom unit. Something pokey in Ultimo or perhaps a little more spacious if you’re prepared to accept a 20km commute.

If you want a Sydney house for a Brisbane budget you’ll be heading 40km or even 50km out of town. You might as well keep going and cross the northern border to a Queenslander with a breezy veranda or a solid brick house with a spacious back deck and cool afternoon beverage.
