Brissie residents already know we can buy a champagne lifestyle with a beer budget, and now international onlookers are also discovering the relative affordability of our world class city.

The 2018 Mercer Cost of Living Ranking shows that Brisbane sits in 84th place on a list of 209 cities across five continents.

Mercer compiles the list to help global organisations and workers understand living costs for expatriate employees.

It measures the cost of more than 200 items in each location, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment.

So where are the world’s priciest cities? Asia takes the lead this year dominating four of the top five places.

The world’s most expensive cities are:

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Tokyo
  3. Zurich
  4. Singapore
  5. Seoul

Aussie cities have actually slipped down the list this year, but it’s generally not because we’re getting cheaper. It’s because other places are getting more expensive, reports domain.com.au.

Where do Aussie cities rank in the global cost of living index?

  • Sydney – 29th
  • Melbourne – 58th
  • Perth – 61st
  • Canberra – 77th
  • Brisbane – 84th
  • Adelaide – 87th
