In the Residential Architecture New Houses category, two Queensland homes earned national recognition.
The off-grid Cape Tribulation house by m3architecture wooed the judges with its nature-first design principles, literally building the house around existing trees to avoid clearing them from site.
Mitti Street House by James Russell Architect also placed nature first. The house is designed to sit high and dry to avoid monsoonal flood waters. You’ll never reach for the Aerogard here with shade cloth running the length of the exterior creating a mozzie-free screened courtyard garden.
All the renovators out there will want to take a look at Burleigh Street House by ME architecture group which extended an existing bungalow by adding new pavilions north and south.
Meanwhile James Russell Architect also won renovation acclaim for Dornoch Terrace House which was transformed from squat to modern art with some local graffiti artist input.
While the professional judges were besotted with mod-art, sophisticated cladding, swanky glass and climate-inspired technologies, the general public displayed far simpler tastes.
The People’s Choice Award went to Tent House by Sparks Architect in the Noosa Hinterland.
“Esky and tent” is how the house is described, with the structure operating like an “insulated box” in the cooler months opening to a tent-like structure in warmer months.
