US citizens shocked at the result of their own presidential election have almost broken the internet looking for new countries to call home.
The Canadian immigration website crashed and Google Trends shows the keywords “move to Australia” shot skywards like Trump Tower as the polls closed.
The same trend was evident with the search terms “move to New Zealand”. Our crafty Kiwi cousins are already capitalising on the exodus of US citizens by posting this guide to moving to New Zealand.
The REA Group (that’s realestate.com.au) has said the US election could affect the Aussie property market in other ways too as US investors steer clear of their own uncertain market.
“People in the US are likely to look to safe haven markets – Australia will be a beneficiary of this as it is considered to be one of the safest markets in the world,” said REA Group Chief Economist Nerida Conisbee.
Longer term the US will need stable leadership to prevent a recession, says Conisbee, so Australia’s economists are also watching closely to see how Trump will perform as America’s 45th president.
