If you want to avoid the crowds at Southbank, Redcliffe or Newstead Park then check out these north side alternatives for an Australia Day gathering closer to home (and your air conditioning).
Eatons Hill, 15 Bunya Pine Court: Kumbartcho Sanctuary is a forest reserve with native flora and fauna, a playground and barbecues.
Chermside, corner Newman Road and Delaware Street: the 7th Brigade Park has multiple play areas, including a wheelchair friendly swing and disabled toilet, barbecues and sheltered tables.
Stafford, Teevan Street: Keong Park has a fenced playground, basketball court, barbecues and space for a cricket match. But Brisbane Kids warns, the toilets in the community centre will only be unlocked if prior arrangement is made to hire the space.
McDowall, 815 Rode Road:Downfall Creek playground and bushland centre is part of Raven Street Reserve. The centre itself is closed public holidays, but you’ll still enjoy the playground, nature trails, barbecues and basketball court.
Wooloowin, Junction Road: Melrose Park caters for bikes, scooters and skateboards as well as offering a playground, basketball court, barbecues, some covered tables and toilets.
