Brisbane first-timers are doing it easier than their southern counterparts with new figures revealing that Brisbane has a far higher proportion of suburbs with a median house price at or below the average first home loan of $375,000.

In fact 65 suburbs across Greater Brisbane fall into this category, says Domain Group chief economist Andrew Wilson. This compares to seven suburbs in Melbourne and four in Sydney.

The price disparity is prompting a first-time buying bonanza with Queensland recording 5,000 more first home buyer loan approvals than New South Wales in 2016.

So where are the first timers buying? Dr Wilson says the following outer suburbs have the most listings:

  • Morayfield
  • Woodridge
  • Redbank Plains
  • Deception Bay

Within a 15 kilometre radius, he says the following suburbs offer the greatest choice for first home buyers:

  • Taigum
  • Runcorn
  • Zillmere
  • Wynnum West
  • Acacia Ridge

While outer suburbs might see slower capital growth than those closer to the city, it’s a personal decision for buyers about what’s important to them in terms of amenity or house and land size.
