Did the in-laws outstay their welcome this festive season? Perhaps some visiting relatives are still outstaying their welcome as you read this.

Housing two families under one roof over the summer holidays can drive some homeowners to wish they were back at work already.

If you want to stop wishing away your holidays it may be time to boot the in-laws outside and into a granny flat.

Domain reports secondary dwelling approvals increased in 2014-2015, and it seems the humble granny flat is evolving into an architectural statement in itself.

They’re not even called granny flats these days, but more likely to be termed “studios, pods, retreats, pavilions or flexible multi-function spaces” reports Domain.

The change in terminology is reflective of the changing purpose. When you’re not confining your rellies to the granny flat you can use it as a home office or studio, an outdoor pavilion or a teenagers’ or parents’ retreat.

There’s a lot you need to know before you rush out and buy a granny flat. So start with these tips.

  1. Check the Brisbane City Council website to determine if you need planning approval.
  2. Do your research into design and construction options. Will a prefabricated dwelling save you time and money or does your backyard demand a bespoke architectural gem?
  3. Be imaginative. Check out these blinged-up granny flats on Domain and Houzz for inspiration.
