Are you a first home buyer looking for a brand new home? Relax. You’ve got another six months to take advantage of the $20,000 Queensland First Home Owners’ Grant.

This grant was due to be reduced to $15,000 from 1 July 2017 but the full $20,000 has now been extended to 31 December 2017 in a boost for first timers announced with this month’s State Budget.

Do conditions apply? Of course.

To be eligible for the grant:

  • You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or applying with someone who is).
  • You or your spouse must not have previously owned property in Australia.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must be buying or building a brand new home, valued under $750,000.

You can test your eligibility on the Queensland First Home Owner Grant website.

The grant applies to buying or building a new house, unit or townhouse, including properties you build yourself or buy off the plan. Your contract to purchase or build must be signed between 1 July 2016 and 31 December 2017.

The $20,000 doesn’t apply to contracts that replace previous contracts entered into before 1 July 2016. But you might still be eligible for the $15,000 grant so it’s worth checking your eligibility to be sure.
